NRSC TO HOLD AWARD CEREMONY FOR DRIVERS
The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) as part of its planned programmes for this year has partnered with Shenkani Ghana Limited, a private driver welfare agency to organize drivers and road safety award ceremony for road transport organisations, drivers and corporate citizens who have distinguished themselves in promoting road safety in Ghana.
The Commission has opened nominations for prospective awardees from among Commercial Road Transport Drivers, Commercial Road Transport Operators, Drivers Union and Haulage Transport Operators to submit entries before 3rd October 2018.
The event which was instituted in 2010, under the Ministry of Transport, was to encourage better road safety practices among Commercial Transport Operators and Unions in both passenger and Haulage Services and subsequently in 2011, acknowledged the media for its contribution.
The event dubbed, “Ghana Drivers and Road Safety Awards” scheduled for November is expected to contribute towards the attainment of the national target of reducing casualty level by 50 percent by the year 2020 and also help raise awareness on road safety among road users.
According to the Coordinator of the 2018 Ghana Drivers and Road Safety Awards, Mr. Gabriel Adu Sarpong, this year’s event has some variations. The Commission has introduced a new category for “Best Road Safety Oriented Driver Award”, to honor drivers from recognized Transport Unions who have excelled in safe driving and best road safety practices. He added that, the national award committee would vet the nominees from the various transport operators in the regions, follow up to observe their operations over a period of time among other tests to come out with a winner.
He explained further that, “The Commission’s main focus on this year’s award will be on drivers hence there are certain steps a nominee must follow before declared as a winner. Nominated drivers will be interviewed after which the short listed ones will visit DVLA for further assessment before coming out with a winner. In selection of overall best driver and transport organization, the sub-committee of the National Planning Committee will develop and use a selection criterion, opened to all awards targets. These include Customer Service, Safety, Operational and Vehicle standards. We shall look out for how these drivers ensure safety on the road, how they serve their customers (commuters) among others and since we are collaborating with a private driver agency, our main focus will be on drivers.”
The Special Guest of Honor will be H.E the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo He called on Corporate Ghana to show support for the event in cash and kind to make the as a commitment to the safety of their customers and patrons of their services.
